Genesis Remote Start: How to Use It

Remote start lets you start a Genesis from outside the vehicle with the smart key. This guide covers the button steps, the range, how long the engine runs, why it may not start, starting from a phone digital key and the safety notes. It is based on the 2027 GV80 owner's manual (JX1) on owners.genesis.com, read October 28, 2026. Other Genesis models, years and equipment can differ, so check the manual for your vehicle.

  1. Within about 32 feet (10 m) of the vehicle, press the door lock button on the smart key.
  2. Press and hold the remote start button within 4 seconds of pressing the door lock button. The engine starts.

Remote start from a phone digital key

If you use a Genesis Digital Key on a smartphone that supports Ultra Wide Band, the 2027 GV80 manual says to use the app provided by the phone maker: lock the vehicle with the door lock button, then press the remote start button within 4 seconds. The vehicle starts and the hazard warning lights blink. Press the remote start button again to turn the vehicle off.

Genesis says these phone functions work while the phone is connected to the vehicle by Bluetooth, and that Remote Start, Panic or Liftgate open may not be available depending on the country or vehicle type (hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle). Phone key setup is described in the Genesis Digital Key section of your owner's manual.

Safety and other notes

The 2027 GV80 manual gives these cautions and related notes:

  • Do not idle the engine for a long time.
  • Do not operate remote start in closed areas where there is no adequate ventilation for the engine exhaust.
  • In the Advanced Rear Occupant Alert section, the manual notes that inside movement detection stops if the vehicle is started remotely (on vehicles equipped with Remote Start).
  • If the smart key battery is weak or the smart key does not work correctly, the manual says you can start the vehicle by pressing the Engine Start/Stop button with the smart key, as shown in the manual.

If remote start stops working, our service team can check the smart key and the vehicle. You can schedule service online.
