Genesis GV80 Towing Capacity and Towing Guide

Before you hitch a trailer to a GV80, check the limits and the setup Genesis describes. This guide lays out the 2027 GV80 and GV80 Coupe trailer and tongue weight limits, the driver assistance features that switch off with a trailer connected, and Genesis's rules for hitches, chains, brakes, hills and maintenance. It comes from the 2027 GV80 owner's manual (JX1) and the genesis.com GV80 specifications, both read October 28, 2026. Towing requires additional equipment, and the manual for your vehicle is the final word.

What is the Genesis GV80 towing capacity?

The 2027 GV80 owner's manual lists 6,000 lbs. (2,722 kg) with a trailer brake system for the GV80 and GV80 Coupe, 1,654 lbs. (750 kg) without trailer brakes, and a 600 lbs. (272 kg) maximum tongue weight, with tongue weight between 10% and 15% of the trailer weight. Genesis.com lists 6,000 lbs. maximum towing capacity for every 2027 GV80 trim it shows.

2027 GV80 trailer weight limits

The manual's specifications chapter gives one chart for the GV80 and the GV80 Coupe. The towing chapter repeats the 6,000 lb. figure in a "With trailer package" column and lists no rating in its "Without trailer package" column.

From "Reference Weight And Distance When Towing A Trailer" and "Trailer Towing" in the 2027 GV80 owner's manual (JX1), read October 28, 2026. The manual notes tongue weight should be between 10-15%. Genesis.com 2027 GV80 specifications (October 28, 2026): maximum towing capacity 6,000 lbs. for each trim listed.

The maximum trailer weight includes the trailer, any cargo, and equipment or items attached to it. Genesis adds that any extra weight, cargo or accessories in the GV80 reduce the maximum trailer weight and the matching tongue load limit, and that towing loads beyond these limits can seriously affect steering and performance and may damage the engine and drivetrain. Before towing, make sure the total trailer weight, gross combination weight, gross vehicle weight, gross axle weight and tongue load are all within the limits.

Tongue weight and loading

The tongue load matters because it adds to the GV80's gross vehicle weight (GVW). Genesis says the trailer tongue should weigh a minimum of 10% of the total loaded trailer weight, within the maximum of 15%, and never more than the 600 lb. maximum tongue weight in the chart.

Load about 60% of the trailer load in the front and about 40% in the rear, never more in the rear than the front. After loading, weigh the trailer and then the tongue separately; if the numbers are off, you may be able to correct them simply by moving some items around in the trailer. Genesis suggests a commercial scale or a highway patrol office equipped with scales.

Driver assistance features while towing

Keep your eyes on the road: when a trailer is connected, the manual says these functions turn off automatically: the Forward/Side Safety function of Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Safe Exit Assist, Lane Following Assist, Highway Driving Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, Reverse Parking Distance Warning, Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist and Remote Smart Parking Assist.

Genesis also says to disable Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist when towing, because the system will activate when it detects the trailer while reversing, and as a precaution to disable driver assistance systems such as Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist and Smart Cruise Control before towing. Turn off Idle Stop and Go (if equipped), and use a genuine Genesis tow harness; an authorized retailer of Genesis-branded products can advise.

Hitches

TopicWhat the manual says
Hitch typeThe bumpers are not intended for hitches. Do not attach rental hitches or other bumper-type hitches; use only a frame-mounted hitch that does not attach to the bumper.
Holes in the bodyIf you make holes in the body to install a hitch, seal them when the hitch is removed, so exhaust carbon monoxide, dirt and water cannot get in.
Genesis accessoryA Genesis-branded trailer hitch accessory is available at an authorized retailer of Genesis-branded products.
Sway controlConsider using a sway control; you can ask a trailer hitch dealer about it.
Towing kitConsult an authorized retailer of Genesis-branded products about additional requirements such as a towing kit.
Hitch carrierKeep luggage, plastic coolers, camping gear, tarps and other flammable items away from the exhaust pipe, especially when using a cargo hitch carrier.

From the Trailer Towing section of the 2027 GV80 owner's manual (JX1), read October 28, 2026.

Safety chains, trailer brakes and lights

Always attach safety chains between the GV80 and the trailer, following the hitch or trailer maker's instructions. Leave just enough slack to turn, and never let them drag on the ground.

If the trailer weighs more than the maximum without trailer brakes when loaded, it needs its own braking system, set up to the regulations and installed, adjusted and maintained per its instructions. Do not modify the GV80's brake system, and use an experienced, competent trailer shop for the setup: Genesis says it is not a task for amateurs.

Towing requires a different turn signal flasher and extra wiring. Do not connect trailer lighting directly to the vehicle's lighting system; use an approved trailer wiring harness. The cluster arrows flash for turns even if trailer bulbs are burned out, so check the trailer lights every time you reconnect the wires.

Driving with a trailer

Before you start

Check the hitch and platform, safety chains, electrical connectors, lights, tires and brakes, then recheck the load, lights and trailer brakes now and then during the trip.

Speed limits

No more than 60 mph (100 km/h) or the posted towing limit, whichever is lower, and on a long uphill grade, 45 mph (70 km/h) or the posted towing limit, whichever is lower.

Downhill

Trailer instability is more likely on steep or long downgrades. Slow down, allow more time and distance for braking, avoid sudden braking and downshift to help keep the brakes from overheating.

Uphill

Shift down and slow to around 45 mph (70 km/h). On grades over 6%, watch the coolant temperature gauge; if it moves toward H (HOT), pull over and let the engine idle until it cools. Use the right-hand lane.

Space and turns

Stay at least twice as far behind the vehicle ahead, allow extra passing distance, make wider turns than normal and signal well in advance.

Parking on hills

Avoid it with a trailer attached. If you must, chock the trailer wheels on the downhill side and follow the manual's step-by-step order before shutting off.

Maintenance when you tow

A GV80 that regularly pulls a trailer needs servicing more often. Genesis names engine oil, transmission fluid, axle lubricant, cooling system fluid and brake condition, says to check transmission fluid more frequently when towing, and suggests reviewing these items before a trip.

Keep the trailer and hitch maintained too, preferably checking them at the start of each day's driving, with every hitch nut and bolt tight. If the coolant gauge shows overheating, switch off the air conditioner, stop in a safe area and keep the engine idling to cool it; do not switch the engine off while the gauge shows overheating.
